Temple Newsam is famous for its collection of historic wallpapers spanning the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, many of which are ingenious to the house. Surviving in-situ is a hand-painted Chinese Paper, a gift to Frances, Lady Irwin of Temple Newsam by the Prince of Wales on a visit in 1806, and hung by her eldest daughter Isabella, Marchioness of Hertford in her newly created Chinese Room in 1827. Ongoing restoration of the house interiors has led to the printing of many of the Temple Newsam historic papers in facsimile reproduction from surviving fragments, most notably the sensational Green Flock wallpaper hanging in the Picture Gallery and the striking 'Gothick' paper in the Gothick Room.
